We love tartar sauce in our household—it’s a firm favourite. We use it with everything from classic fish and chips to grilled fish, crispy prawns, grilled veg and even with grilled chicken. It adds that perfect creamy, tangy touch that brings any simple dish to life.

This is an easy version you can whip up quickly while dinner is cooking, or make ahead and keep in the fridge for a couple of days—ready to go whenever you need it.

A white dish with tartar sauce topped with green parsley sits on a minimalistic white background, edged with a dark blue rim.

Serves 4 adults

Prep Time: 5 min

Ingredients:

  • 200 g store-bought mayonnaise

  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and roughly chopped

  • 3 tablespoons dill pickles (gherkins), drained and chopped

  • ½ small red onion, finely chopped

  • ½ tablespoon lemon juice

  • 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Method:

  1. Add all ingredients to a bowl.

  2. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.

  3. Taste and adjust with more lemon juice, salt, or pepper as needed.

  4. Chill for at least 10 minutes before serving (if you have the time—it helps the flavors come together).

Variations:

Lighter Option: For a fresher, lighter twist, swap the mayonnaise for 200 g of Greek yoghurt. It keeps the creamy texture but adds a tangy note and a boost of protein—perfect if you're after something a bit healthier without losing flavour.

This easy tartar sauce is proof that big flavour doesn’t need a lot of fuss. Whether you're serving it with fish, chicken, or veggies, it's a quick little upgrade that brings everything together. Once you try it homemade, you might never go back to the jar!

Happy Cooking!
